Travel Tales & Tips

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” - Benjamin Franklin

It seems every time I travel, there is some kind of hiccup or story to go with it and this time was no different. We got back from Jackson Hole about a week ago, and in typical form, our travel did not go perfectly as planned. We had a layover in SLC, which was nice. We got to walk, stretch, catch up on work, and grab a healthier meal than airport grab and go. So far so good. As we were descending on our short flight into Jackson Hole, five minutes from landing, we were told there was a mechanical issue and we could not land there. We were being turned around to SLC. We thought it was odd we were able to land in SLC with a mechanical, but that’s obviously not something we had control over. Long story short, we had to stay in SLC.

While annoying, these challenges weren’t a huge deal when I was younger or when traveling alone. It’s much more stressful with kids. It was late, we had been up since 5am, and some essentials were still in a checked bag on the plane.

Andrew makes fun of me for packing snacks everywhere we go and travel is no different. I feel at my best when sticking to my routine as best as I can, especially when it comes to nutrition and sleep. Andrew and Gracie are the same, and the hangry gene runs strong in our family. While I didn’t have my toothbrush and Gracelyn didn’t have any clean clothes, we did have healthy snacks!

Having a late night and then early flight started our trip off behind schedule and exhausted. Often when we are tired, we reach for a quick pick me up. Lack of sleep increases the brain’s sensitivity to food, making junk food more appealing and leading to poor choices. It’s challenging to find healthy options in an airport, especially on the low FODMAP plan, but it can be done! I found an immunity booster smoothie for myself and egg scrambles for the family.

Fortunately, the rest of our trip went as planned. We don’t restrict ourselves while traveling, but remain mindful. This requires some simple planning ahead of time.

Tips for healthy travel without feeling deprived:

  • Wear your walking/running shoes and walk in the airport while waiting

  • Stick to a normal sleep schedule when possible

  • Pack healthy snacks

  • Probiotics

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Happy Travels!
